Quake Champions Will Be Free to Play

But it will still carry a great cost...

Quake Champions, Bethesda's long-awaited sequel to the former king of multiplayer shooters, has been floating around the public eye for a while now. While concrete details have been sparse for most of that time, with only a few trailers going around, the launch of the new website and the sign-up for the closed beta have been releasing a much more steady stream of info for hungry FPS gamers looking for a return to form for their preferred genre.

Well, the good news is that we now know a fairly important fact about the upcoming title. If what comes next is good or bad news, however...

Enough dallying, you already know the gist from the title: Quake Champions will be a free-to-play title. At least, kind of. In an interview with Polygon, creative director Tim Willits revealed that the game itself could be free to play and download... but you'll be stuck with only one of the many playable champions, The Ranger... at least, at first.

"At its core, it's a free-to-play game. with the option to buy the Champion Pack and just get in and play with all the Champions. There are a number of Quake players that just want to play their Quake, right? And they are familiar with the business model of our previous games, and they are totally fine. 'I want to buy the game. I want to start playing. I want to have access to all the Champions.' But then we also understand that we want to get as many people into the game as possible, especially outside of North America and Western Europe, where we have a massive fan base. So we want to have the flexibility to have a free-to-play option for those people."

So yeah, you can either buy the Champions Pack with real money and get every hero off the bat, or, you can earn them by grinding in-game for Favor, if you're cheap. Of course, there's no word on how long this could take, but still, it's interesting to see this strategy (employed by games like Smite, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, and even For Honor) employed here, as well.

Will it work out? Who knows, but free ain't bad. It's exactly within my price range.
