My father was obsessed with Quake and Quake II for the N64. He would spend hours diving into the monstrous, pixelated Hellscapes. He'd also rage about the buggy little memory cards. Since Quake II, though, he hasn't really been interested in the series. When asked, he'd just say, "it's just not the same." Well, now I know what to get him for his birthday.
Spoiler: Not a puppy.
At QuakeCon, attendees were shown the first look at gameplay for Quake Champions. They entire focus of the presentation what the style of Quake. Speed. Guns. Rockets. Rocket jumping. More speed. Quake Champions has that iconic level of chaotic speed and carnage that brought us to the series in the first place. The weapons are absolutely brutal. A rail gun in the right hands can dominate the map. And speaking of weapons, there are no limits. Every player can pick up and hold all weapons at once. The only limitation is whether or not you picked it up. That is very reminiscent of a classic gaming idiom. If you see a gun you like, kill the person holding it. Together, these help define this game as Quake. And I think I speak for everyone when I say, "It's about damn time!"
