Quake Champions was essentially a buy-to-play experience (though if you wanted all champions, it was priced at an MSRP of $39.99), creating a little bit of a roadblock for those who wanted to experience the game in its entirety.

Well, now the fast-paced arena shooter has gone completely free-to-play, which has been announced during QuakeCon 2018's keynote. The game is now available for all players to download on Bethesda's launcher and Steam.

What's more is that after a lot of updates, Quake Champions now features new Champions, modes and features, and while it has become free to play, the game technically remains in early access, as there are improvements, new content (Capture the Flag mode, for instance), and additional fixes to implement.

What you'll receive with the free-to-play version are the Quickplay, Ranked, and Arcade game modes and maps, as well as two free Champions: the Ranger and Scalebearer. So how do you gain more Champions?

Well, you can complete the in-game tutorial and earn Quake Champion's currency - Favor - by participating in matches. Additionally and like several other free-to-play games (looking at you, Heroes of the Storm), there will be one free Champion rotated each week, so you'll have a chance to try them out. However, if you don't want to take the time to unlock Champions via Favor, you can always outright purchase them with Platinum, the premium currency that requires dolla dolla bills.

You can always pick up the Champions Pack, however, which allows you access to all current and future Champions. Furthermore, you'll gain the ability to create Custom Matches and access to some awesome skins. The Champions Pack is discounted for the duration of QuakeCon for $19.79. After that, it will be priced at $29.99, but that particular deal will only last until September 4, 2018. You'll then have to pay $39.99.

Now, Bethesda needs your help by opening up to feedback and input, so if you happen to play and feel that there are improvements to be made, make your voice heard.

So now's the time to give Quake Champions a try! Pretty cool, right? Quake Champions is available on PC, via Steam or Bethesda launcher.
