PUBG Will Charge Money for Custom Matches/Private Servers

Of course they will.

You know, despite the fact I have no real interest in battle royale games, I have a weird, perverse fascination with PUBG. Not for the game itself, god no, but rather for how they act. The once untouchable superstars of the gaming world dropped down to second place when another game came and did their thing better, and they’ve done everything from moping and coping to throwing a hissy fit. And it seems their second-place mentality has been cemented as a part of company culture.

Here’s what I mean: PUBG is currently running betas on hosting custom matches, and you can set one up and play with it no problem. But PlayerUnknown himself (Mr. Brendan Greene) made it clear in a conversation with PCGamesN that it won’t be free when beta ends: because servers cost money and “that’s how the world works.”

Direct quote:

“I was a modder for many years, and I didn’t expect ARMA to provide me with free servers to mod on, and it’s the same with this. We can’t provide people with free servers. There has to be a way to pay for servers through some sort of wall - either points, BP or money. We just can’t provide free servers for everyone, it’s just not a sustainable business model. I still pay for ARMA 3 servers to this day, because that’s just how the world works.”

Which, by the way, was also how he justified the fact that even more loot boxes would be added to the game, even going so far as to say “sales can only get you so far”.

But man, that quote has everything: pointing out there's a precedent, an attempt to appeal to logic, an attempt to appeal to emotion... it's clear this guy is really worried and is just being super defensive. And he should be: anyone with half a brain could see these are just excuses. If No Man's Sky can release free updates for three years on sales alone, PUBG should be fine. They're just bitter they're not also worth $8 billion.

I wonder what whack shenanigans they get up to next time?
