PUBG Continental Series Still On, and Players Are Getting Paid

Good for them.

PUBG, which despite everything, is still doing quite well for itself, is one of the more prominent names in esports, with competitions between professionals netting millions of viewers worldwide and battling over millions or prizes. And as you can also probably imagine, any esport that involves 100 people fighting in the same digital and physical arena might not be the best idea in the world of COVID-19, where even having two people in the same room could be a health hazard.

PUBG was one of the first companies to realize the impact of COVID-19 and postponed its Berlin tournament “indefinitely” back in February. But there are other tournaments out there, and with COVID-19 sticking around for a long, long time, they’re now all officially canceled for the foreseeable future… but since the PUBG folks don’t want this to be strictly bad news, they did offer two bits of good news for both players and fans.

For the players, the good news is that all the teams that qualified won’t be going home empty-handed. The 21 competing teams will be taking home 20k in cash as a consolation prize – far from what they would have gotten if they had won, but probably more than they would have gotten if they were one of the 20 teams to lose.

For the fans, the good news is that there’s still going to be some professional PUBG to enjoy: the Continental Series will now be moving online, so all the teams from around the world will still be competing for your entertainment. The total prize will be 2.4 million USD, split up between three events: a charity tournament, the invitational, and finally four PCS regional tournaments.

PUGB Corp had this to say:

"This year, we have been working to enhance our esports programs by providing sustainability for teams, strengthening the fandom, growing the ecosystem with our partners, and improving the competition structure and profit-sharing model. Though we cannot host the PGS events as initially planned, we would like to emphasize that our commitment towards our goals is unwavering."

Glad to hear it: we'll all need something to occupy ourselves as this drags on...
