PUBG Announces "War" Mode

Otherwise known as "Team Deathmatch".

Fortnite was the first Battle Royale game to decide to shake up the formula a bit with new and exciting modes, the first of which is the extremely well-received 50v50 mode, which is actually set to return sometime real soon. The extra modes fit the game rather well, due to their goofy nature and the fact that Fortnite is an innately goofy title, but it was only a matter of time before PUBG, drawing up the rear, decided to try something similar with their own, more serious-minded game.

To that end, their third foray into the world of silly custom games – after the flare and shotgun modes went over so swimmingly – is called “War." And it basically turns PUBG into a normal team deathmatch game.

But alright, we’ll break it down. You’ll spawn on a very small slice of the Erangel map, and over the span of 15 minutes, a maximum of 30 players in ten-person teams will kill each other. Unlike a normal match of PUBG, instead of getting kicked from the game when you die, you respawn in the plane and jump out to try again. Knock someone down, your team gets one point. Kill them, you get three. But team killing robs your team of 5 points, so stay on your toes for that.

Players will drop with a random automatic or marksman rifle, a random pistol, a level 1 helmet, and a grenade. But extra loot can be found in buildings and in care packages, which drop every 90 minutes.

It sounds fun. Don’t get me wrong. But it feels kind of weird to celebrate it. I mean, remember when the Battle Royale was the fun alternative to a standard team deathmatch? Now a team deathmatch is the alternative to a battle royale.

The times, they are a changing.
