As the next generation of consoles peaks over the horizon, more and more evidence of what to expect begins to surface. Take the PlayStation VR headset. According to recently discovered patents, the second-gen headset may feature eye-tracking and wireless connections.

The patent, which was filed with the US Patent & Trademark Office on December 12, 2019, for Sony Interactive Entertainment, described a head-mounted display system akin to a VR headset.

It begins with a feature that tracks the wearer's eyes in order to ensure that they're getting a clear vision from the display. Instead of the common method of image analysis, the PSVR2 (not the official name) uses ultrasound transducers to locate the position of the user's eyes. Saving you the science, it essentially uses echolocation to know where you're eyes are located, even if it can't see them.

That's not the only interesting detail listed. The patent also describes technology allowing the headset to receive audio and video signals over a wireless connection. Cables can be an incredible hassle when in VR, especially when you can't see them. Many VR companies have been investing in wireless capabilities as well as wireless adapters for older technology.

The PSVR established itself as one of the most affordable introductions to game quality VR. The ongoing rumors relating to a second PSVR system have sounded pretty impressive so far, but will these features come with a spike in price? Only time will tell.
