PS5 is Still On Track for Holiday Launch, For Now

That could change at the drop of a hat, however.

Good news to all the Sony faithful out there: so far, it’s looking as if the COVID-19 pandemic has not disrupted the production and intended release date of the PS5, which was supposed to come out during the 2020 holiday season.

This news comes to us from Sony themselves, specifically their fiscal statement for the end of the fiscal year, which was put out on March 31 of this very year, where they wrote:

Regarding the launch of PlayStation®5, although factors such as employees working from home and restrictions on international travel have presented some challenges in regards to part of the testing process and the qualification of production lines, development is progressing with the launch of the console scheduled for the 2020 holiday season. At this point in time major problems have not arisen in the game software development pipeline for Sony’s own first-party studios or its partners’ studios.

So nothing has gone wrong yet, but we’re still quite a few months away from the holiday season and that could always change. Combine that with the fact that this pandemic can’t seem to settle down, and the fact that Sony couldn’t reasonably hope to host any kind of Launch parties, or for people to stand in line for these bad boys on their release day, could seriously impact how they perform as well as the odds they’ll even be out on time.

The other good news for people who are really invested in Sony is that the company is still doing alright, all things considered: while the pandemic has hurt hardware sales and impacted their supply chain, they’ve compensated with an enormous upturn in digital game sales: which makes sense, as people are not going out and desperately in need of something to do.

So… a good time to be a Sony shareholder, I guess?
