PS2 Emulations Appearing on PS4

Buy them, play them, relive your history

Backwards compatibility was always one of the sticking points of the newer generation, in that it’s not really a thing anymore and people miss it a whole bunch. Both the Xbox One and the PS4 lack it altogether (although the Xbox One is currently in the process of fixing it) while Nintendo’s alternative is the virtual e-shop where you can buy emulators of their more famous, popular older titles. Technically a solution, albeit not a very good one since you can’t find all the games there and you still have to pay for them a second time.

Still, better than nothing, right? Sony agrees, and following rumors that the PS2-era Star Wars games would be released on the PS4, Sony has gone ahead and just confirmed the rumors--a moment of straightforwardness that should be appreciated in an era where companies will deny anything, no matter how obvious or simple it is, if it contradicts their timetable. Responding to a follow-up by Wired, Sony had the following to say:

“We are working on utilizing PS2 emulation technology to bring PS2 games forward to the current generation. We have nothing further to comment at this point in time.”

Good to have the confirmation. Now, the games that sparked this rumor, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, are already on the store and can be ‘played’, so I’m not completely sure what more needs to be done (an announcement page, maybe?) but then Sony has been acting a bit coy with this stuff for a while now, so they could just be waiting for the release of the movies to make a more official announcement/deal thing. Hard to say. Regardless, if you have fond memories of those games, this is your chance to give em’ a play again.
