In a recent interview with Glixel, Bethesda Game Studio's executive producer Todd Howard gave us some insight on the progress of the Fallout 4 VR project (sadly Doom was not mentioned). Howard explains that the very nature of Fallout 4 has made it a relatively smooth experience transitioning into VR, due to the games interface and generally slow gunplay compared to other first person shooters. I think we can all look forward to using our Pip-boy's in and taking advantage of the incredibly unique V.A.T.S., system in virtual reality.
"The Pip-Boy is on your wrist and we've been able to present so that it works the way you expect. You look and there it is. The fact that the gunplay is a bit slower than in a lot of games has certainly helped us but we have V.A.T.S., so you can pause or slow down the world,"
The biggest challenge that Bethesda is facing in the transition to virtual reality is the method of travel. As we all know, Fallout 4 is an extremely massive game, and this massive scale of a game requires a lot of walking. Howard explains that they've been using the "teleport warp" method so far and it works fine, but they are also experimenting with other methods that will hopefully make the process of moving more fluent, without breaking immersion.
