Goodbye Project Spark. We hardly knew ye. First Fable Legends is canned, and now Project Spark, another Microsoft project, is going offline forever. Team Dakota and Microsoft are done with Project Spark, a game-making tool for the PC and Xbox One, and it will go offline on August 12. This includes online services such as the ability to download and upload user-generated content. Unfortunately, those looking to download it on Xbox One and PC will no longer be able to, as the download was made unavailable after May 13.
According to the Project Spark Sunset Announcement on the forums:
"This was an extremely difficult decision for our team that we do not take lightly. When 'Project Spark' transition away from active development last fall, many of our team members moved to others within Microsoft Studios. While this means there have been no layoffs at Microsoft, it also means it's simply no longer feasible to continue the behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping 'Project Spark' up and running with meaningful updates and bug fixes, so we have to this hard decision."
It would make sense that they cannot keep up anymore. Doing it as a free download without garnering a lot of revenue probably led to this. Unfortunate, but a community was born as a result, so that's something, isn't it?
