The Binding of Isaac is one of those games that defines a generation of gaming, even if people don’t quite realize it. It was the Binding of Isaac, from Meatboy developer Edmund McMillen, that really brought Roguelikes back into the forefront of the indie world, with AAA following after. Even though it was first released in 2011, the popularity of the grim world of Isaac and his mother continues to persist to this day, through countless add-ons and spin-offs.
One such add-on, however, was a little bit different than the others. First launched in 2016, The Binding of Isaac: Antibirth was released, free of charge, to the public. But while the add-on was extremely impressive, adding a vastly improved co-op mode, a ton of new enemies, bosses, items, rooms and characters, the caveat was that it actually wasn’t released by McMillen himself. It was a fan mod - a fan mod so popular and well-received that it basically became mandatory to own if you had the game on PC. It was so good, in fact, that McMillen himself even tweeted the developers to get in touch with him to see about possibly making the mod “official.”
Well. That was two years ago. And today, a Tweet was released by publisher Nicalis, teasing the next big Binding of Isaac update, and people can’t help but notice that the new logo looks shockingly similar to the Antibirth logo.
You can check it out right here.
Of course, nothing has been confirmed, but it’s hard to imagine it could be anything but the long-awaited fan-mod, finally officially realized across all platforms. Which, frankly, I think is really cool for a number of reasons, but the most important being more content for Binding of Isaac fans who just can’t get enough of this weird, gross, mind-trip basement.
The video says we’ll learn more at the next PAX. So it shouldn’t be too long till we see everything.
