You know I never miss a chance to talk about Pokemon Go, the mobile phenomenon that took the world by storm and reinvigorated the craze we all thought died in the '90s. Niantic, the company behind it, has made some misplays and missteps along the way, having stumbled into such amazing success, but that hasn't made the potential of Pokemon Go any less significant, now that we're a few months in.
What is less significant, however, is the size of the player base. Now, it can be little surprise that a game like Pokemon Go, which was ultimately very simple and grindy, would eventually lose some interest. However, the amount of people actually leaving the game behind is rather staggering.
According to Slice Intelligence, who decided to dig into the actual popularity of the game a few months in, Pokemon Go has seen an unprecedented loss of paying users, dropping a whopping 79% since the game's population peaked at July 15th.
At its peak, it was around 120 million paid users. However, in the two months since, that number has dropped to 20 million+ paid users. That is, frankly, amazing. But don't start feeling bad for Niantic: despite the drop in popularity, they're still doing VERY well for themselves. It is still by-and-far the most profitable mobile app currently on the app store. When you add together all the revenue that all the mobile games on the app store made this past August, Pokemon Go is responsible for 28% of it. All by itself. As a point of comparison, the next most profitable game, Candy Crush Saga, was only responsible for 4.5%.
Geez.
So, if you were worried about Pokemon Go going anywhere: don't. Even if the numbers continue to drop, Niantic has more than enough money flowing into it to keep growing their seminal application. It's just a matter of how far it'll go, from here.
