Pokemon Go came out, of course, and in case you haven't realized, it's pretty damn popular. People are going all over the place, catchin' Pokemon, battling for gyms, and claiming territory for Mystic, Instinct, and Valor... which, in a way, kind of makes Pokemon Go a sort of geeky gang simulator.
Well, in case you were in doubt as to how popular Pokemon Go truly is, let's put it this way: in some respects, Pokemon Go is more popular than sex.
No, seriously. According to a chart by SimilarWeb, which compares apps currently installed on SmartPhones, Pokemon Go has been downloaded on 5% of all smartphone machines... compared to Tinder, famed dating/hookup app, which has only been installed on 2% of smartphones. And, at least for the time being, more people are using Pokemon Go every day than Twitter--so people care more about catching 50 animated characters than sending 120 to their followers.
Which is great--especially when you consider that, as of right now, Pokemon Go is only available in the US and in Oceania, whereas Tinder and Twitter are used internationally. These numbers will very likely explode when Pokemon Go can get to Japan, China, Europe and Canada, but for the time being, the app's worldwide launch is "on hold", according to Niantic CEO John Hanke, while Nintendo works out a number of bugs with the game--and not just the bug-types that are infecting your backyard.
Now, if Pokemon Go is going to STAY this popular? Probably not. Eventually, the novelty will wear out and people's desire to stay on their butts will override their interest in walking around and visiting the same landmarks to restock their Pokeball stash. But for the time being, people are moving, Nintendo stocks are rising, and people are happy--so let's be happy for that, shall we?
