PlayStation VR, which is fast becoming known as the cheaper, more accessible cousin to the Oculus Rift and the Vive, is still a ways off yet. And while we don’t know much about Sony’s prospective plans for the hardware, there have been a lot of rumors and questions swirling around it. Sony has been characteristically tight lipped, but one of the questions they find they can’t ignore is if PlayStation VR might branch away from the PlayStation system it’s named after to be a VR machine for the everyday man.

When asked this by Japanese website Nikkei, Sony at least hinted that while it’s going to be a long ways off, the idea of branching PlayStation VR to other machines and devices is still on the table. PlayStation executive vice president Masayasu Ito said:

"Since Playstation 4 shares a lot of its internals with PCs, the possibility is there. At the moment we are focused on games and we are not ready to make any announcements at this stage, but I'd say there will be an expansion into various fields."

So, that’s nice. I wouldn’t go buying a PlayStation VR for your PC just yet, but it’s cool to think that the machine might be useful in other ways--maybe for phones, or TVs (which would make sense, given what else Sony does), PC’s… hell, even the Xbox One? Doubtful, but we can always keep our fingers crossed, and dream of the possibilities…
