Theres been a lot of excitement for the only console-based VR system on the market. But only now are we actually seeing what well be wearing on our heads. PlayStation has unveiled the official design for the PlayStation VR 2 headset.
Detailed in a blog post, Sony shows off the new designs for the headset alongside the controllers. Almost all white, with black trim, it shared much of the visual design that the PS5 has. Otherwise, it follows much of the same shape and style of the original PSVR headset from the previous generation.
But we learn about more than just looks here. The new headset will come with some features that make it stand out. This includes a new ventilation system. According to SIE senior art director Yujin Morisawa, the engineering team came up with a method of cycling air through the headset, preventing lens fog. This will be particularly helpful for active games that work up a sweat (looking at you, Beat Saber).
Otherwise, the headset boasts general specs, like 4K HDR, enhanced camera tracking, and new controllers. Though this information isn't exactly new. We learned about the PVSR 2s specs back in January when PlayStation officially revealed the headsets existence.
While this sounds nice, it only further reinforces our primary concerns: Price and availability. Part of what made the original PSVR great was because it was a tremendously affordable way to get into good VR. But the PSVR 2 doesnt utilize the same conveniences like older controller technology. And with all of the high-end specs and new hardware involved, were terribly concerned that the official price tag is going to be much higher, and far less accessible.
But we dont know this for sure yet. Sony has not given an official price tag or release date for the PSVR 2 system.
