The PlayStation 4 has been rather successful despite its sales (slightly) slowing down - then again, it's been four years since its debut. Either way, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) released the numbers for the holiday sales, and they were quite good, though not as good as the 2016 Holiday numbers. Throughout Holiday 2017 beginning November 19, 2017, and ending December 31, 2017, in North America and Latin America (between November 20, 2017, and December 31, 2017, in Japan, Asia, and Europe), 5.9 million PlayStation 4 units were sold, bringing lifetime sales to 73.6 million.
Does this mean anything? Of course! The PlayStation 4 has officially surpassed the PlayStation 2 in terms of sales - at the four-year mark, anyway. From March 4, 2000, until March 31, 2004, 71.3 million PlayStation 2 systems shipped. In other words, the PlayStation 4 outdid the PlayStation 2 by 2.3 million units throughout the same time stretch. And best of all, the PlayStation 4 is still going strong. We're seeing a lot of titles in 2018, including Monster Hunter: World, Yakuza 6, Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, and more - perhaps even Kingdom Hearts III.
Much excitement. Anyway, here's to another wonderful year with the PlayStation 4, though we probably should start thinking about the PlayStation 5 soon, huh?
