PlayStation 4 Getting a Giant Hardware Update

Or, more accurately, "You might be able to buy a more impressive console in the near future!"

So, earlier last week, we got ourselves a little treat from Microsoft, who ‘revealed’ via a customer service page that an updated Xbox One controller would soon be upon us, with a built-in 3.5 mm audio port so you can plug headphones directly into it. Pretty nice. Sony, your retort?

Oh my...

Yes, as discovered by Dualshockers, reported by Kotaku, and reposted by GamerzUnite, new and improved PlayStation 4 designs have just been submitted to the FCC, and it might be one of the biggest hardware updates we’ve seen in console history!

The first and most impressive change is simply the amount of memory in the new system: whereas the classic PS4 has 500 GB of data stuck in there, this upgraded machine has one terabyte—which is double the capacity and an insane amount of data.

But that’s not all—this updated model, called the CUH-1215B in the FCC report, also eats less electricity, and weighs .3 grams less, meaning it’s likely at least a little slimmer than the ol’ Vanilla PS4 machine you currently have.

Sony, obviously, hasn’t said anything official about this redesign, and I imagine they won’t have anything to say for a while, at least until E3 rolls around. While a “better” PS4 is certainly far from the earth-shaking announcements we might expect, heck, it’s still pretty nice; and it might be enough for the system to ‘compete’ with the PC market, if you want to believe that.

The question now, however, is how much this new machine costs. Exactly how much is double the memory worth for the average gamer? And are there changes we perhaps don’t know about yet hidden somewhere in that machine?

I suppose, as I’m so fond of saying, only time will tell. I’ll be sitting here crossing my fingers for backwards compatibility.
