Fans are bouncing after a recent announcement for GTA6 was posted on Grand Theft Auto Online. The only problem is that it's fake.
The message, shown above, appears as an official in-game message announcing GTA VI for 2019. Weird, low-key announcements like this aren't totally unheard of by Rockstar. And while it certainly looks legitimate, there are a number of discrepancies that all point directly toward them being false.
The first is Red Dead Redemption 2. The game company has put a heavy fair of advertising, effort, and dramatics toward the game and it's public image for a while now. One could argue that a new Grand Theft Auto would be able to shadow such a game. Why put all their marketing eggs in that basket instead of the bigger cash cow?
The second is the people getting the message. The people reporting to have received this message are in the minority. The only platforms to see this message are ones that support modding, and only some of the people on these platforms report seeing the message. Why limit your message to such a small audience?
Other examples include the lack of a relevant link, just "rockstargames.com." While the idea of a new Grand Theft Auto game sounds exciting, this is nothing more than a mod developer playing a trick on their patrons. But to be safe, I've reached out to Rockstar for a statement.
