Playdead's Next Game Will be Sci-Fi, and 3D

Will probably be at least kind of sad.

Playdead is a studio that’s best known for horror, abusing children, and really disliking walking to the left, as so far the small developer has only released two games: Limbo and Inside. Both games are 2D puzzle platformers where you have to navigate a cruel and uncaring world, both have ambiguous but undoubtable sad stories, and both depict children getting killed in the most gruesome of ways – hence the little joke at the top. And in a recent interview with Danish site DR, Arnt Jenson, the co-founder of the studio, admits he’s actually getting a bit tired of that kind of thing.

2D games, I mean.

He’s still rather committed to lonely child murder.

"[Our next game] will be a little bigger game than the other two. It becomes more open and then it becomes a 3rd person game with a much larger area that you can move around. I've been tired of the limitations in 2D games. We have been through [it] all over the past many years."

He did talk a little bit in the interview about what to expect from the game itself: it’ll be a lonely sci-fi game, apparently, that will be “set somewhere in the universe”. He very much expects it to scratch the same itch that Limbo and Inside do, with the same “open to interpretation” plot that’s supposed to get people asking why these guys hate children so much.

He also made it clear that fans shouldn’t expect a solid release schedule or anything like that. It takes time to think of creative ways to torture your protagonist and scar your audience, so they’ll be finished when they’re good and ready, which will likely be a while from now.

So yeah. You have that to think about. We’ll have to see if the shift to 3D will make that big a difference or not.
