PlanetSide 2 is one of those strange games that seems to occupy a kind of purgatory in the world of MMO gaming: it’s popular, it’s got a good, steady supply of players, and it gets constant updates so it’s always at least a little fresh, and yet, no one really talks about it. At least, not the same way we talk about other multiplayer games like Destiny, World of Warcraft, or League of Legends. Still, despite not being on the forefront of anything, the game has a good reputation, and one of the ways Sony tried to sell the PlayStation 4 was by saying that PlanetSide 2 would be playable, for free, on the console.
The PS4 has been out for two years now, and still no PlanetSide 2.
Fortunately, that’s about to change, as today on the PSN blog we received a much-needed update from the PlanetSide 2 team saying that yes, the game will be coming to the PlayStation 4, and it’s coming soon: later this month, on the 23rd, to be exact!
PlanetSide 2 is a MMOFPS, where over a thousand people can do battle on a giant map for one of three factions—the kind of thing tailor-made for a high-end PC, or a powerful console: Daybreak Studios has even said the game will run at “ultra” levels of graphics and speed on the PS4, which… is pretty damn impressive, really.
The PS4 port of the game will also come with extra bonus features, such as a new map and “improved gameplay experience”… perhaps most impressive, however is that apparently this game is a “true” Free-to-play… in that you don’t even need a PS+ subscription to play. Which, of course, would be very nice, but that doesn’t change the fact it takes forever to grind for upgraded guns and tools.
Still. Pretty exciting, to finally get our hands on this new-and-improved PlanetSide 2. Here’s hoping it can hold up to all the non-hype!
