Just one, though. So there are a few more to go.

So, normally, I’m not the kind of person to report on the hacking world--after all, this is a gaming website, and most of that news would pertain to pointing out games that have been hacked and where to find them. As you can probably guess, I’m not super interested in helping anyone be a criminal, so, I don’t do that. But sometimes, when the right kind of story comes up, I’m interested.

Namely, as Kotaku has reported, we have a very high-profile case on our hands right here--a hacker group, based in china, who has finally found copy protection that could finally outwit them.

The game in question is Just Cause 3, and the group, 3DM, which made itself a comfortable reputation for cracking into single-player games and giving them out for free. Normally, that kind of thing would be bad, but given that they’re based in China and oftentimes the only way to get access to western media is to pirate it, well… let’s just put them into the ‘morally ambiguous’ zone for right now. Point is, that’s what they do. However, it seems the copy protection behind Just Cause 3, called Denovo, is so good, it’s enough to frustrate the group away from cracking single-player games… at least, for now.

“We just had an internal meeting. Starting at the Chinese New Year, 3DM will not crack any single-player games. We’ll take a look at the situation in a year’s time to see if genuine sales have grown. Cracks by overseas warez groups will still get posted on the [3DM] forum, and we will actively deal with these.”

We don’t know what that last part means yet, but still, this is an interesting move on the part of the group. They were one of the largest in the world, but, they’re far from the only ones cracking single-player games, and they’re still going to be working on multiplayer games in the meantime. Also, I think it’s interesting to note that the leader of the group is a woman. Which is nice, you hear so much about how men dominate the industry, but here we’ve got a woman leading a group of hackers. Love the 21st century.

Anyway. Now that I’ve got my nose in this story, I’ll keep ya’ll posted.
