This is according to e-mails that informed customers of the date change from retailers such as Best Buy and Amazon. At first people were skeptical, as it could've been a mistake, but at the same time, if many retailers have sent out these e-mails, why would it be a mistake?
So it turns out that Blizzard confirmed the change with GameSpot:
"We would like for all of the players to be ready to dive straight into the action when the servers go live, so retailers are going to begin selling the game when their stores open on May 23rd."
This is good news, because, in this case, everyone will be ready to play when midnight rolls around. This just provides physical owners with the opportunity to receive and install their game rather than wait half the day on release.
Then again, it probably wouldn't matter if you have work, but at least you can play directly at midnight before you head to bed, right? Still, this move will level the playing field, because in a competitive game like this, digital owners who have several extra hours to play ahead of physical owners (typically) might be able to stomp all over the physical owners.
