People Are Angry Over Mortal Kombat 11's Microtransaction System

The most brutal kill yet, themselves.

Mortal Kombat is one of the biggest names in fighting games. Its mythical lore and brutal sense of violence has been captivating audiences since 1992. But the recently released Mortal Kombat 11 has left an unfortunately sour taste due to their monetization practices.

How It Works

In Mortal Kombat 11, the player can earn Time Krystals through various gameplay acts. This currency can then be used to purchase various in-game items like one-time consumables and alternate fighter skins. Alternatively, players can also purchase additional Time Krystals at a 1:1 rate, so 500 Krystals for $5.00.

Why People Are Unhappy

Mortal Kombat 11 has a lot of content. Lots of skins and items to unlock. If you want to unlock all of it, you'll have to do some game grinding. Reddit User AccomplishedPoet8 did the math and found out that the amount of grinding to get everything would be outrageous. They also determined that the cost to simply purchase enough Krystals to bypass this would also be rather large.

"There are 23 characters in the game, each of which has 60 skins. But playing through the story, character tutorial and basic towers will usually unlock 4 of these, so we have 56 skins to unlock
So based on these, we get: 23 * 56 * 5 = $6440
Note that these calculations include the patch which the devs promised would solve the progression issues
This figure does not include: fatalities, brutalities, gear or single use consumables because I have not figured out the exact drop rate for these.

I got around 760 Time Krystals after 4 hours of play. At this rate, it will take me 3390 hours to unlock every skin."

AccomplishedPoet8 then explains that you could skip all this and purchase all in-game content at the cost of $6,440.

As you might imagine, people are angry. Many folks consider this to be an abusive use of microtransaction practices and have chosen to not purchase the game as a result.

The game has been out for about a day or two, and this is all anyone is talking about. There's already reports of the game's retail price dropping by $10. This is a rough way to launch a game. With any hope, they'll do what Battlefront 2 did and remove such blatant money-gouging.
