The peripheral company recently announced a program called Razer SoftMiner. It's a computer program that will use the PC's GPU to generate cryptocurrency in the background for a third-party company. The user will then be compensated with Razer's own virtual currency, known as Razer Silver.
The program was produced in partnership with GammaNow, who manages a similar mining service that offers game coupons instead of digital currency. Since this particular program rewards with Razer Silver, users are limited to redeeming the value toward Razer products, around 20 available games, or discounts on merchandise.
Brandan Sinclair spoke with a Razer representative, who shed some light on the process.
"We do not in fact split anything with [GammaNow]. They have purchased Razer Silver and award it directly to the users through the platform, which is integrated with SoftMiner. Razer is simply providing the software, integration with GammaNow, and the virtual currency credits to be distributed."
The SoftMiner system is currently in beta and can support up to 5,000 users per week. The big question is whether or not the Razer Silver makes up for the increased energy usage the process would cause.
