Payday 2 made headlines earlier last year when its developer, Overkill, decided to introduce microtransactions into a game that had, up until this point, been entirely free (after purchasing it, of course)... complicated by the fact that these weren't just cosmetic changes, either. The weapon skins you could unlock actually boosted the stats of your weapons, which gave players who were willing to dish our cash an edge over their cheaper counterparts. Overkill rationalized this by saying the game was entirely co-op, but in a lot of ways, that kind of made it worse: it meant you'd have to pay money if you didn't want to be a burden on the other players.

Well, good news, Payday fans: a new company, StarBreeze Studio, the folks behind The Chronicles of Riddick, Brothers: The Tale of Two Sons, and that Synidcate reboot, have recently purchased Overkill, and have decided that their first act as new owners of the company will be turning the controversial Black Market store absolutely free, so everyone can benefit from the weapon skins.

Starbreeze CEP Bo Andersson Klint continued, saying:

"Payday is very close to my heart, and has laid the foundation for Starbreeze success in recent years. We're very excited to bring our heisters home to the safe house. To start with, we believe in the continued success of Payday 2 and will support it for at least another 18 months continuing expanding the game."

He also said that Payday 3 is going to be a thing, but didn't provide any extra details. You can see everything he had to say here:

Gotta say, that's some pretty great news. Good enough to get back the old fans? Maybe not, but... it's something, right?
