Payday 2 Getting Ultimate Edition, Free DLC

All good news in here!

Nothing quite like a good redemption story, eh? Two years ago, Overkill was vilified by once starry-eyed fans for introducing Microtransactions into their beloved Payday 2, and it only got worse when the game added pay-to-win elements in the form of weapon skins unlocked via crates and drills. But now that they’ve been bought out, they’ve tried to turn a new leaf, and they’re gearing up for the ultimate show of consumer trust: free DLC.

Here’s what’s going down. Starting today and going until June 8th, all of Payday 2’s DLC is going to be on sale on Steam for a whooping 85% off, allowing you to catch up on some content you might have been missing. But once June 8th rolls around, (almost) all that DLC will vanish from the store… and be replaced with a Payday 2: Ultimate Edition, which includes every DLC pack the game has ever released. The only exception being the April Fools Ethan and Hilda pack, whose proceeds go directly to the youtube pair.

Once the ultimate edition is released, however, we’re not done yet! Because Overkill has announced that they’ll not only continue to support the game, but they’ll support it for an extra year, pushing back the “stop creating new content” line from 2017 to October 2018. And best of all, anyone who owns Payday 2 after June 8th will get all future DLC for the game absolutely free, regardless of if they own the Ultimate edition.

Pretty cool, right? Yes, but here’s the caveat: it only applies to Steam right now. Overkill has informed us to keep an eye out for what console players will receive in the future.

Find out more on the official site, right here, and let’s give a big ol’ thumbs up to Overkill. A hero is cool, but a hero turned villain turned hero? That’s about the best story there is.

…for a story about dudes robbing a bank anyway.
