Battle Royale games are the biggest trend, so jokes relating to it were expected. Developers Grinding Gear Games have tackled the idea with full force, adding a Battle Royale mode for their popular top-down game. The announcement comes to us from a community post made on their website.
"Based on community feedback, we are announcing that we have abandoned the Action RPG genre to focus on what players really want. Path of Exile is being replaced by Path of Exile: Royale, a 100-person free-for-all battle royale game. Path of Exile: Royale is live right now. Just run the old Path of Exile game client and it will update to Path of Exile: Royale."
This is real. You can actually play this. Download the 3.2.2 patch and you can enter a realm of 20-100 players all fighting in a designated area. The safe zone shrinks over time, and the last player to survive is awarded with a Rhoa dinner to display at their hideout.
No word as to how long this mode will be available, but it certainly seems like a fun idea to me.
