The Overwatch Christmas comic has come out. It had about a dozen pages of story and images that spanned many different Overwatch characters. Of course, almost nobody paid attention to any of those, because Tracer kisses a girl near the end. Overwatch niches of the internet can't stop talking about that. Well, in the parts of the internet where it wasn't censored, at least.
Remember this?
In case you've forgotten, Russia has a pretty strict (and insane) law outlawing public discussion about homosexuality. It's been widely considered the "gay propaganda" law, and it stretches to everything, including video games. So the Overwatch Christmas comic over there has absolutely no reference at all to Tracer's "non-traditional" homosexuality.
I bring this up for a couple of reasons. First, I like to keep readers aware of international politics and how it affects video games. But mostly, I wanted to mention this tidbit to combat the responses I've seen to the comic. Regardless of how you feel about it, you probably live in a nation that allows it to exist in the first place. It exists. We can read it. And nobody has the right to stop us. Not everyone is as lucky as we are when it comes to free speech. So next time you want to go off on a tantrum about something you don't agree with, take a second to appreciate the fact that you at least have the freedom to be offended in the first place. Then have your tantrum.
