The matter was even brought up over the forums, where users pondered if two new maps a year was enough to keep sustained interest in the game. Curiously enough, this warranted a reply from Game Designer Jeff Kaplan, who promised users that they had way more than just two maps in store for the future:
“We currently have 3 maps in development, all past the initial playtesting phase that are "standard" maps (QP/Comp). While something could always change, all 3 of those are looking likely for a release this year.
We also have 3 non-standard maps in development (these won't go in QP/Comp).”
Three maps, yo! That’s 50% more maps than first predicted! But then we’ve also got the non-standard maps too, so all things considered, that’s quite nice. More than enough, I feel, to satisfy the Overwatch fans, who are addicted enough to the gameplay and characters to take any excuse to keep plugging away. So look forward to that. And once again, props to Blizzard for taking the time to answer these kinds of questions for their fans. Transparency is always appreciated these days, you know?
