The Overwatch League is on its way as sign ups will begin on August 1. There will be seven cities and owners, one of which is Robert Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots. In addition to Robby, we have Jeff Wilpon from the New York Mets, Noah Whinstone from Immortals in Los Angeles, Been Spoont out of Miami-Orlando with Misfits Gaming, Andy Miller from NRG in San Francisco, NetEase working out of Shanghai, and Kevin Chou the co-founder of Kabam from Seoul.
These teams have until October 30 to draft the best players around and get their full lineup. Each member must be paid a minimum salary of $50,000 along with health insurance, retirement plans, housing, and half of a team's performance bonuses. These bonuses come to a total of $3.5 million, with $1 million being rewarded to the first place team. Each team must consist of 6 to 12 members and they can be drafted from anywhere in the world.
I'm glad that Blizzard is being extremely up front and direct regarding the pay for these players. There have been a ton of issues in the past with players getting paychecks and benefits, but Blizzard wanted to take care of that issue before it ever even came up. This should be a very exciting year for Overwatch and you better make sure you're competing your heart out if you want to win a spot!
