With every console generation, there lies the issue of older games. Choices have to be made whether to support backwards compatibility at the cost of efficiency or if other methods will be put in place. When the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 first released, neither had the ability to play games from their prior generations. As time passed, Xbox received backwards compatibility with a select number of Xbox 360 titles, and both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 began to add old titles to their online marketplace. They didn't stop at Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games, Sony has been building a digital collection of PlayStation 2 games on their market. It seems Xbox has now followed suit.
As of October 23,
games from the original Xbox have been appearing on the Xbox Live Marketplace. So far, the following five games are the only ones that have been added, but no doubt there are plans to expand the selection:
- STAR WARS Knights of the Old Republic
- Prince of Persia The Sands of Time
- Dead to Rights
- King of Fighters: Neowave
- BloodRayne 2
Where's the bad news?
These digital titles aren't for the Xbox One but the Xbox 360. As it currently stands, Xbox One remains unable to support backward compatibility for original Xbox titles. The Xbox 360 has had support for original Xbox games for a long time, so this change isn't nearly as large as one may have thought. Let's hope you didn't toss out your old 360 then.
Each title can be purchased from the Xbox Marketplace for $9.99, a fitting price for something that old.
