Monster Hunter is no stranger to cross collaboration. Some are pretty wild, too. But we can safely say we didnt expect this. Introducing the Monster Hunter: Rise / Okami cross over event.
Thats right, the 15 year old action adventure game is being honored in the latest Monster Hunter. Starting on July 30 (tomorrow), players will be able to hunt alongside the protagonistic Amaterasu by applying a new Layered Armor to their Palamute companion.
The event will involve a special event quest to get the Okami style armor. While the details of the quest havent been revealed yet, we all know that the quest itself isnt what everyone wants, it's the armor reward.
Okami was a noteworthy but commercially unsuccessful game of its time. It took a more unique approach to gameplay mechanics and combat, while also paying a great homage to traditional Japanese folklore. In the game, the player controls the goddess of the sun Amaterasu in the form of a white wolf. As they go around fighting demons, the player can use a celestial brush to draw out shapes on screen. This allows them to perform special moves and abilities.
Okami had been one of Capcoms cult classic games that everyone assumed they forgot about. They hadnt done much after it, claiming that sales werent good enough to merit a sequel. They did release an HD remaster of the game in 2012 for modern consoles, which has been ported to newer consoles as they came out.
It makes sense, though. Palamutes are a new thing for the Monster Hunter franchise. And with dogs on the mind, having an Okami reference would fit perfectly. Were glad they did it. Besides, it'd have felt pretty bad if Amaterasu was a hunted monster instead of a teammate. Not sure how we would feel about killing and harvesting them.
The Okami event will be free to all Monster Hunter: Rise players and will release on July 30.
