Video games are a great source of inspiration. A perfect example of this is with Nintendo's Mother franchise. It was the source of a much-anticipated fan sequel, Mother 4. Said game is now rebranded as it's own RPG, known as Oddity.
Oddity was recently revealed on YouTube by O197X. It is a complete rebranding of the Mother 4 fan game, removing any art, characters, or assets legally similar to the existing Nintendo franchise.
in Oddity, youngsters Travis and Zach Fields, teamed up with good boy Floyd and the magical Meryl Hinton, have to explore the world of Pleiades to uncover the truth behind the recurring disappearances of the local townsfolk. The game features wacky characters, a strange world, and equally interesting items.
You might be wondering why the complete rebranding. This is most likely due to Nintendo's firm stance on intellectual property protection. Nintendo has a history of shutting down fan-made projects that are based on their games. Just a few years ago, they shut down a 2D remake of Breath of the Wild, for example. It's not clear if the Oddity developer was issued an order by Nintendo over the Mother 4 fan game. But it would have happened eventually. The rebranding may have just been a precautionary measure, protecting the creator before an issue arises.
Oddity will be available "when it's ready." Considering the original Mother 4 fan game was first set to release in 2014, we'll probably have a fair amount of waiting to do.
