With this modern age of secondary monetization, game enthusiasts are gun-shy about whether an upcoming game will have things like paid DLC and microtransactions. Fortunately, Octopath Traveler producer Masashi Takahashi, from Square Enix, and director Keisuke Miyauchi, from Acquire, have stated that the game will not have DLC.

The two spoke with Dengeki Online about the game, its development, its characters, and the idea of DLC. Some notable remarks have been translated into English and detailed as follows.
  • The game was planned for the Nintendo Switch since the start of development. The developer's familiarity with Nintendo allowed them to prepare for it before the Switch was publicly available.
  • There will not be a new game + mode. They intentionally wanted players to finish the game in one playthrough. Though they clarified that "depending on the order you go about things, the difficulty will organically change."
  • To complete just the main story, they expect it to take about 50 to 60 hours. Though they understand that many players will want to finish everyone's story. To "fully experience everything the world has to offer through the use of path actions," it would take around 80-100 hours.
  • You can, if you really want, beat the game without recruiting any of the other characters. That would make it more like Unapath traveler!
  • As for DLC: Takahashi stated that we havent even thought of having DLC. The retail version is a complete game.
