Obsidian Likely Won't Work on Fallout Ever Again

But that doesn't have to be a terrible thing.

With Fallout 76s open beta just around the corner, people have Fallout fever: and not just the entire state of West Virginia. People are reminiscing on their favorite fallout memories, the past games, and wondering when, or if, a new proper single-player Fallout game will ever be made again, if Fallout 76 is supposed to, and I quote, be worked on forever.

But if Bethesda is going to work on Fallout 76 forever, then maybe that means that a third party could be trusted with the IP, you know, to make a single-player game while Bethesdas attention is elsewhere. Maybe you could turn to one of the most trusted names in the RPG world for the task. Someone whos has a proven track record with Fallout in the past. Someone who even said in 2016 that they would love to work on the Fallout franchise again.

Obsidian, obviously. People have been wondering if Obsidian will ever make another Fallout game. In fact, someone took the time to actually directly ask Obsidian directly if there was any chance they would work on Fallout again.

Their answer was very precise: very doubtful.

Sadly, its not an unexpected answer. While Fallout: New Vegas was undoubtedly one of (if not the) best Fallout games ever made, Bethesda has expressed a desire to keep development of their IPs in-house for the foreseeable future. Plus, theres that added fact that Obsidian is likely to be bought out by Microsoft soon, which would put some pretty severe limitations on any Fallout games the studio produced, something Bethesda is by no means interested in.

So yeah, it seems as if Fallout: New Vegas will be a lightning-in-a-bottle moment for the series. But if Bethesda is serious about working on Fallout 76 forever, then maybe the sting of the loss will be minimized. At least a little bit.

Assuming, of course, the game is any good to begin with.
