For those of you that watch streamers, I'm sure you've seen or at least heard of H1Z1: King of the Kill. In this battle royale game mode players drop from the sky with just the clothes on their back, some bandages, and a pair of binoculars. They must search the map for vehicles, armor, guns, explosives, and ammunition in order to be crowned the last man standing. As the game progresses, safe zones are marked on the map and get smaller and smaller as time goes on. A toxic gas spreads from the corners of the map inward and those caught outside of the safe zone will begin choking and slowly dying until they are in the designated area.
While that is a very brief summary of King of the Kill, the game had its very first 5-man team tournament on April 20th called Fight for the Crown that aired on The CW. 15 teams each consisting of 5 members each battled it out for a prize of $300,000. This was a huge event and the winning team got to take home the largest portion of the 300k, which totaled to $180,000.
Normally in a game like this, you expect people to get picked off from every team and maybe the final fight of the game would consist of 5 remaining players from 5 separate teams. This was not the case by any means. In the tournament, Obey Alliance ended up taking home the grand prize and still had all 5 members of their team alive. Of the 70 players that died on that map, Obey refused to lose one single member. They played extremely strategically and while the other teams were picking fights, Obey waited for the firing to stop before making a move to clean up the leftovers.
Their communication was excellent and the team really deserved to walk away with all that money. I'm really hoping that this televised event will give more airtime to different game tournaments. I know that you can watch every tournament on Twitch for the most part, but seeing gaming come to well-known television channels is really awesome! I'm glad I got to see the event and if you missed it, you can check it out down below!
