Is it true that the Wii U may not be completely out of the game quite yet?

According to Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima, that may not be the case. The president stated that the Nintendo NX is a new console--not just a new console, but a console that doesn't follow the same principles as the 3DS or the Wii U.

During the same interview that mentioned that Nintendo is considering leaping back into the film business, Kimishima stated that the NX is a brand new project that will blow the Wii U out of the water:

"The NX is neither the successor to the Wii U nor to the 3DS. It's a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U, but I don't feel it's a pure replacement for the Wii U."

Of course, this isn't the first time Nintendo emphasized this. Last year, the late Satoru Iwata has even stated:

"If you only expand upon existing hardware, it's dull. In some shape or form, we're always thinking about how we want to surprise players as well as our desire to change each person's video gaming life."

What's this supposed to mean exactly? It won't be an exact replacement for the Wii U, so does that mean that the Wii U will be still in the game post-release of the NX? Are there more games planned for the Wii U? Quite possibly. But it's also important to note that everything about the NX is up in the air right now. It won't even be unveiled at this year's E3, despite being on sale during March of 2017.

People are speculating, however, with the latest rumor claiming that the NX will be supporting cartridges rather than discs.

So many mysteries about the NX, so little time.
