Yesterday, the NVIDIA announced the new GeForce GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 cards that are based off of the new Pascal Architecture. And wow, are they sleek. Here are the highlights of the cards:
  • Both cards will be faster than the Titan X.
  • The 1000 series are much faster and far more energy efficient than both the GeForce 980Ti and the GeForce GTX Titan X. This is true, because apparently the minimum wattage required is only 500. Even the GTX 680 requires a minimum wattage of 550.
  • The 1080's "unprecedented performance" will allow PC users the horsepower to "play the newest games with settings maxed out." Monitor or through a Virtual Reality headset, it doesn't matter.
  • The GTX 1080 features a 16nm FinFET chip with 8GB of GDDR5X memory. NVIDIA promises the card won't be bottlenecked by "memory-related operations in the most demanding games," thanks to the high bandwidth memory. The GTX 1080 comes with a redesigned vapor chamber, fan, and a backplace that will dissipate heat from the back of the card. In other words, overclockers can rejoice.
  • Finally, there will be Founder's Editions for both the 1080 and the 1070, at $699 and at $449 respectively. Apparently, these editions will be more for overclockers--at least for the 1080, it will provide "more overclocking headroom." Not only that, but the new cooler will be only featured in the Founders Edition cards. Look forward to the GTX 1080 on May 27, and the GTX 1070 June 10.
I wish I could afford the Founder's Editions, but I can personally settle for a little less. Still worth it to save up after all this time.
