It hasn't been that long since Blizzard made Nostalrius shut itself down, but now a new legacy server is closing down already. This server, Elysium, has attracted a lot of players to their old school servers using Nostalrius assets. The team behind the original work has asked Elysium to stop operating as such.
Blizzard's take down of the pirate, legacy server "Nostalrius" took the gaming world by storm. When the original-style World of Warcraft server shut its doors, it opened a dialog everywhere. Particularly, it had us all asking the question, "where do you draw the line for piracy?" The original gameplay of World of Warcraft is so different from today's, that it's difficult to even call it the same game anymore. Then again, pirate servers are using Blizzard's IP.
The Nostalrius team states that operating more cracked servers only hurts the overall cause: official legacy servers. The more the community creates and seeks out pirated servers, the less chance Blizzard will consider adding them into the main game. The argument against this is that Blizzard has already stated (more than once) that it would simply take way too much work to do.
I've personally never had the chance to play the original World of Warcraft. By the time I had the cash for a monthly subscription, the game was already adapted for casual play. I know that I would personally love an opportunity to play the original. That experience may not be off the table forever, but it's at least a long time coming.
