No Man's Sky has been a game full of surprises. It surprised us with an underwhelming release, it surprised us with years of amazing game updates. And it surprises us now with a new. in-depth music-making engine.

Developers Hello Games have announced the ByteBeat update. This game content expansion adds a music creation engine to the game, allowing players to produce their own electronic music tracks, and even connect the notes to other objects in the game world. This is primarily done through a new piece of technology called the ByteBeat.

On its own, the device will produce procedurally generated sounds. Interacting with the ByteBeat opens up a fully-fledged music production environment. From here, the player can manipulate the sounds it produces using a variety of additional tools and modifiers. They can add percussion and guide the procedural audio into something new.

Snap two or more ByteBeat devices together and they will synchronize, allowing multiple audio tracks to play in time to each other. Before you know it, they'll have a complete song playing. Connecting other devices like lights to the device using a Switch will allow players to control these items through the device. This, for example, can make lights flash to the music or change colors when the drop hits.

For more information about the ByteBeat update, including an example track produced by audio director Paul Weir, check out the update page on their official website.

Of all the updates we could have tried to predict for No Man's Sky, this was not one of them. We can't wait to get funky in VR. The ByteBeat update should be live now.
