No Man's Sky developer Hello Games has been working tirelessly to help give players everything they're asking for. When the game was first released, there were a ton of problems. From bad save files to becoming stranded on planets, No Man's Sky is quickly and effectively being repaired as time goes on. Every game has issues on launch. That's just a part of the business. However, this has already begun to spell disaster for Hello Games.
No Man's Sky is losing players very rapidly. Sales have decreased significantly and the number of Steam users playing has dropped quite a bit as well. The game isn't bad at all though. A ton of people have had problems, and I understand that can be really frustrating. People want a polished clean game on launch day, and while some companies do it better than others, that's not a realistic expectations. I think No Man's Sky definitely had more problems than it should have, and the majority of problems were pretty serious. However, Hello Games has clearly shown their dedication toward making this game incredible.
Constant patches on a game this massive is a tough thing to do, and Hello Games is churning them out constantly. They haven't abandoned ship. They didn't take the money and run. They really want to show the world what they're capable of. I would assume that sales have probably dropped off because people are just waiting. I think the game will grow again, but it's going to take some time. People don't want to spend full price on a game right now that isn't starting off too well. They would rather wait for problems to be solved and for the price to drop a little. It's a shame that No Man's Sky ended up having all of these issues and it's really going to cripple their potential profits. Over time players will return, but Hello Games needs to get this thing clean and polished before Star Citizen comes out. If Star Citizen has a clean launch and doesn't run into the same problems that No Man's Sky ran in to, people might forget what No Man's Sky even is.
