No Man's Sky Gets Huge Day 1 Patch, Small Delay

Because that went over so well last time.

No Man's Sky, the game that's probably not as good as you think it's going to be, still has quite the reputation it has to live up too. After all, this game has been hyped for years, with fans and developers alike promising the sun, moon, and stars for anyone willing to explore the universe with them, because apparently "restraint in marketing" is for the weak-willed. Well, with so much hype, it's only natural that Hello Games would get a little anxious, and with the game one day away for some players (more on that in a bit), director Sean Murray went to their website, and basically said "the game we had completed wasn't good enough, so we're changing everything in a day-1 patch."

Or something to that effect, anyway.

"We’re under a pretty intense spotlight right now, and hopefully it’s easy to imagine how hard it would be to switch off from that, or how deeply we care about people’s first impression of the game.

In fact, most of us were back here the day after we went gold, working on this update. We’re already proud of what we put on a disk, but if we had time, why not continue to update it?"

And boy, does it show. The list of changes coming in patch 1.03, the day-1 patch, is enormous, but the biggest changes include: picking one of three paths at the start of the game to change your destiny, adding more plant and animal diversity on the planets, making galaxies larger and re-mixing the planets, more atmospheric diversity, diets, changes to survival mechanics... it's a big list. Check it out on the link above, but for the average No Man's Sky player, it won't be any real 'differences', since it's coming out before the game launches properly. So it'll only really affect games journalists (whose reviews are probably useless now, thank you) and them haxxors.

That said, adding a bunch of new content to a game isn't easy. And, either because of these new changes or for reasons unexplained, while the PS4 version of the game will launch on the 9th, as planned, for PC players, the date of the release has been pushed back another three days, to the 12th of August. Thankfully, PC gamers have histrionically been very reasonable, and will likely accept this news with good humor.

So, PS4 players will get a little head start on the PC counterparts when it comes to exploring the universe. Take that, master race!
