No Man’s Sky has sure come a long way since gamers and critics alike were crucifying it for false advertising just two years ago. In that time, the studio behind No Man’s Sky apologized, which wasn’t too abnormal… but then they took the unprecedented next step of actually doing something about it. In the following months, developer Hello Games released a number of outstandingly large updates, which added content and capabilities to the game that other, lesser studios would have charged money for, such as the ability to build bases. And the game, since then, has actually become quite good by most measures - still not quite the defining artistic and explorative experience promised by the first ads, but then, nothing really could be.
Either way, this significantly improved version of the game is finally coming to Xbox One, and not only will Microsoft’s brood finally get the chance to explore the cosmos from their console, they’ll get to do so with all the updates from earlier versions pre-installed onto the system… and, even better, they – and everyone else who owns a copy of the game – will get a brand-new update which Sean Murray calls “by far our biggest update so far” – which he called “Next.”
As in, that’s its name. “Next.”
While we don’t know exactly what “Next” contains (not even the name is much of a clue), we do know that the Xbox One version will have improved graphics and possibly load-times, and that whatever “Next” is, it won’t be “last,” as Mr. Murray promised that the team would continue to support and develop No Man’s Sky “in the foreseeable future”.
I love a good villain, but I love a good redemption arch even more, and it seems like Hello Games has certainly done that, turning a game you’d be forgiven for regretting spending your money on into something really beautiful. Kudos to you, ladies and gents.
