Its been a wild five years, for everyone. But especially for Hello Games. Its been five years since they released No Mans Sky. And in taking a moment to look back and reflect, they do something theyre pretty good at doing: teasing their next update.
No Mans Sky, the now-popular open world sci-fi sandbox game, has seen a lot since its release on August 9, 2016. While controversial at launch, its received a whooping 16 major updates since and has transformed into a highly recommended game and the biggest labor of love most folks have seen in the game industry.
Today (the Monday this is published), Hello Games frontman Sean Murray released a video about the game, looking back at the many updates and how far the game had come.
Theres almost a nostalgic air to it, especially for long-time fans of the game. Were reminded of the introduction of expanded homes, multiplayer, animal wrangling, giant mech vehicles, sand worms, and living spaceships. The video concludes with a final shot, showing No Mans Sky: Frontiers.
What does it mean? We have no clue! Nothing more than a teaser right now, all we can do is take some educated guesses based on the name. A frontier is the area of land not yet explored or populated by man, so theres an implication that players will gain access to a new part of the universe to explore. But thats just as vague as anything else, really. The only way to know for sure is to wait and see.
Fortunately, Hello Games doesnt wait long for their teasers. We will most likely see a detailed preview video of the update, revealing its contents, here in the following week. If were lucky, they might even have the update ready by then.
Like every update before, this will be free to all players. No Mans Sky is available on Steam PC, Consoles, Xbox Game Pass, and VR. More info can be found on their official website.
