We all know Nintendo’s been doing a rather deep dive into the mobile game sphere. They kicked things off with the good-enough Super Mario Run, which gave them the experience they needed to release the still… kind of popular Fire Emblem: Fates. From there, they were able to release a bite-sized and terribly balanced Animal Crossing mobile title, and now we’re left to wonder what their next game will bring, and how terribly they’ll fail at making fair microtransactions for the thing.
Well, wonder no longer: because Nintendo just announced during its annual results that it’s going to partner up with mobile developer Crygames (who are the folks behind Granblue Fantasy, if you’ve heard of it) to co-develop a brand new IP for mobile devices, called Draglia Lost. We don’t know jack crap about it, save a single piece of released art (which I couldn’t put in the header because we have silly image restrictions) and the fact that it’ll be released sometime this summer.
We also learned that Nintendo will be buying 5 percent of the Crygame’s stock, making them a shareholder in a company that’s been known to publish games on the PlayStation. Which is a bit awkward.
Speaking of awkward, Granblue Fantasy isn’t that big a deal in the west (you can play a version of it on your browser), but it’s a pretty big deal in Japan, getting over ten million downloads and even spawning an anime series. It’s got a lot of former Final Fantasy artists working on the project, and it’s kind of sort of a little bit perverted sometimes, which might be part of the reason it’s so darn popular. Like that “girls are ships” and “girls are tanks” games that keep coming out.
Regardless, it should prove interesting. Let’s hope something magical comes out of it.
