Earlier this year Nintendo had spoken briefly about what they had dubbed the NX, a mysterious new console that would act as Nintendo's follow-up to the Wii U. However, other than the name and the fact it would be a dedicated games console, we knew next to nothing about it. Well, with E3 coming around, there's been hope that we'd learn more about the NX, and Nintendo has delivered: we now know, from Satoru Iwata, that Nintendo absolutely refuses to talk about the NX until next year. Which, while not what we wanted to hear, is still something.
"We do not plan on talking specifics about the the NX until 2016. Presently, we cannot talk about the time period when it [the NX] will go on sale or what it's like, because we are calling it a new concept, we are not thinking of this as a simple replacement for the 3DS or the Wii U."
So this year's E3, which is quickly coming along, will be free from any talk of the NX. More time for the new Zelda game, I suppose, but what about Nintendo's other work? Like the quality of life system it was working on?
"Incidentally, we're getting various questions for this year's E3, like 'Won't there be a NX announcement?,' 'Will there be a presentation on smart devices?,' or 'Will there be more on the quality of life platform? However, since we understand that E3 is an event for dedicated video game machines, we do not intend to discuss the smart devices as well as quality of life."
Okay then. Nintendo's dedication to silence is telling, at least, in this particular case. Gaming companies tend to not be forthcoming about their plans unless theyre absolutely cemented, which might mean the NX isnt a guaranteed thing yet. The Quality of Life system, announced early last year, certainly seems to be in a similar boat.
Still, it only makes our curiosity all the more intense.
