With the very short list of games available for the Switch console, Nintendo is pushing developers to produce more. They are doing everything in their power to give people tools to make games for the Switch, and they need the help of third-party developers. By expanding the scope of development tools, Nintendo is hoping that small dev teams can easily start producing content for the Switch right away.
The Wii U didn't have tools like the Switch does. That was one of Nintendo's biggest mistakes with their last console. With companies like Microsoft and Sony providing development tools all over the place, many developers decided to stay away from Nintendo. Now, desperate for new titles, Nintendo doesn't have much of a choice.
I think that if Nintendo had a huge list of mainstream games available, they would still want to work with indie developers. Times are changing, and Nintendo seems to be taking this very seriously. They've been working with all of their customers that have had issues, they're replacing things for free, handing out gifts to people having issues. They're really making a push to get in with the community. I think the Switch is an amazing console with a ton of potential, so hopefully, some indie devs start stepping up the plate.
