Discovered by Japanese Nintendo, the game company has recently registered a number of new trademarks. While some of them pertain to upcoming game titles, the most notable one is a video game trademark for the Nintendo GameCube, the console released in 2001.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. has applied for three new trademarks for the GameCube in Japan, specifically in relation to video gaming, not general merchandising. This means it's focused on video games programs and machines.
What this means for us, the consumer, is unclear. It's possible that the company intend to bring GameCube games to the Nintendo Switch eShop as a virtual console. This has been a long desired feature, and one the Switch would be powerful enough to do. This may also mean a GameCube Mini device, much like the NES and SNES Mini. Such an idea would mean that the company would skip over the Nintendo 64, which seems extremely unlikely.
Aside from the GameCube, Nintendo also filed the following for trademarks.
- 風花雪月, Upcoming Fire Emblem Game (Three Houses)
- 黄金の国イーラ, Xenoblade 2 DLC
- Sky Skipper, An old arcade game coming to the Switch
- Fitness Boxing, Fitness game to be localized in the West
- NES, as an English word
- Nintendo Entertainment System, also as an English word
- Game Boy, that's right, more English words
- Two for Nintendo 3DS
