Nintendo is doing bad... like really bad. While the 3DS has picked up steam lately, it still has been selling on a slower pace than the 3DS. The WiiU has been a constant struggle-- with low sales and lack of third party games. With both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 making a splash at last year's E3, Nintendo didn't even attempt a press conference; opting for a pre-recorded Nintendo Direct instead.
It seems that Nintendo is not going to take this year's E3 lying down. With the help of Mega64, they released an E3 teaser trailer this morning that would give even the most hardened Nintendo critic some hope for the future. Starting things off was the announcement of the Smash Bros Invitational Tournament to be held at E3... which is quite a shock. It was only a year ago that Nintendo lawyers prevented Super Smash Bros Melee from being streamed at EVO-- only to back down at the last minute after a big backlash from fans. Melee had also been dropped from MLG due to lack of support from Nintendo... only to just now be coming back. Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai himself didn't want Smash to be a competitive fighting game; but seems to be changing his tune with the inclusion of the "for glory" mode added to Super Smash Bros 4 that is obviously meant for tournament players.
The Super Smash Bros community are some of the most dedicated gamers I've ever seen, so to see them now actually be accepted by Nintendo is a huge thing. In conjunction with Best Buy, Nintendo will also be holding Super Smash Bros Fest during E3, where you can go to Best Buy and play the game.
Nintendo will also be doing Treehouse Live at E3, which will be a live stream with game creators demoing the new games they plan on unveiling. There was no mention of a live press conference this year, instead they are doing something they are calling a Digital Event... whether or not that will be live hasn't been confirmed-- but new game announcements are confirmed.
It is great to see Nintendo return to their old quirky style, and to actually be excited for what they're working on again! This video is a must watch-
